Kitenden Pre-School, Tanzania, East Africa

Rotary Club of Albury Hume International Project  2013 and 2014 - Re-opening of Kitenden Preschool , Tanzania.

About 18 months ago, Deborah Wallis-Hinde, and Hannah Wallis-Hinde ,wife and daughter of Howard Hinde (Past President and now Director International of the Rotary Club of Albury Hume), visited the Maasai Tribal  Village of Kitenden, located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Kitenden has a population of about 800, and the visit was arranged by the Future Warriors Project (a charity based in Queensland and registered in Tanzania), to inspect the village Preschool. The Preschool was built 10 years ago and until 2009 the ongoing operation was funded by the village community. However, the long drought in East Africa led to loss of livestock and reduced the income of the village to the point where the community could not fund the Preschool operations. The inspection indicated that the building was in a condition that could be relatively easily restored. The Maasai children speak Maa – which is a verbal language and not written. However, in Tanzania, the language in Primary and High Schools is Kiswahili and unless the children are taught Kiswahili at an early age they will have enormous difficulty with further education. Thus the project undertaken is very straight forward – provide funding to restore and operate the village Preschool so as to provide basic language and other education for the children. This will enable them to progress to Primary School. Primary education is funded by the Government and the nearest Primary School is a 20-30 minute walk for the children. The children will be provided with meals each day to help alleviate malnutrition.

The costs involved for this project are -

-          Repair and renovation of the preschool building  - $4000 – this funding has been provided  and the renovation and repairs completed.

-          Annual Operating Costs of $12,300 for each of 2 years – this funding has been committed by sponsors for two years.

The operating funding will provide

-          education and daily meals for 40 children,

-          employ 2 teachers, 2 cooks, a gardener and a security guard.

The building will be utilized out of school hours as required by the community.

The funding of the Annual Operating costs have been raised from –-          Class Sponsorships at $310each, which is the annual cost for a Child. 33 individual sponsorships have been committed for each year.-          The Rotary Club of Albury Hume has committed $3000 for each year.

-          An application for a 2013 Rotary 9790 District Grant will be made in July 2013 and if successful may be utilized to increase the number of children to be educated in 2014.

The Rotary Club of Usa River in Tanzania will provide local supervision and support as and when required.

The Teachers and other staff commenced employment on 4th February and the preschool will open for students on Monday 25th February. All members of the Kitenden Village community are very excited that after 4 years the preschool is being reopened and the children from the village and nearby surrounding areas will again be given the basic education and nourishment so essential for their future.

The Rotary Club of Albury Hume and the Class Sponsors (many of whom are members of the Rotary Club) are delighted and proud to have been successful in bringing this project to fruition and look forward to continuing to work with Future Warriors Project over the forthcoming two years.
