Club Projects

As with all Rotary Clubs throughout the World, the members of The Rotary Club of Albury Hume are involved in raising funds to assist others locally, nationally and all over the World.

Fund raising cannot be achieved without the help of the local community here in Albury and surrounding areas.

Not all of the members’ efforts revolve around raising funds. The community work that is done on a volunteer basis, and often at own expense, is also an important part of the Club's involvement locally.

Some of the fund raising projects include:

•Monthly BBQ's at Harvey Norman
•Sausage sizzles at Bunnings
•Australia Day BBQ
•Million Paws Walk
•Gate entry at Albury Tigers home games
•Albury Christmas Carols

Several of the Club's main volunteer contributions include:

•Midnight Basketball
•River of Stories
•Easter hampers for the less fortunate
•Christmas hampers

Midnight Basketball started in Sydney several years ago when it was seen that the young people on the streets needed to get something to keep them occupied. So a game of basketball was arranged by the local police and has continued since. In Albury, on a Friday night over two seasons, Rotarians ad others pick up and return youngsters to and from their homes to the PCYC. There they are fed and must participate in pre-game workshops. Then the games are organised and played. The success of this in Albury has been well founded and has given the young something to take their mind off other matters which may result in trouble.

River of Stories Secondary School Literary Competition takes the form of a short story no longer than 1500 words and poetry - no word limit. It is open to year 7 to 10 students.

A workshop is held conducted usually by a visiting Author. These are held at the Albury and Wodonga libraries depending upon the numbers attending.

Now in its 10th year the competition commenced with 6 schools and 78 entries aimed at year 7 and 8 students. In 2005 years 9 and 10 were added together with a poetry section in 2007. Now 15 schools enter and 550 entries are received and the workshops booked out.
